1. Tell us everything there is to know about your new track “Heat”
I wanted to make a track for the dancefloor without sacrificing harmonic complexity. This turned out to be quite the balancing act – weird chord changes or unconventional melodies can easily suck all the energy out of a tune. I was very pleased when I finally came up with a progression that sounds natural and maintains the energy, while including some interesting harmonic turns. The rest was just building the biggest and most expressive bass and melody sounds I could make.
2. What’s the most useful piece of equipment or software in your musical toolkit?
The most important plug-in is honestly Fabfilter Pro-Q – having worked with primitive built in EQs for the longest time, Pro-Q was a revelation to me. My favorite piece of equipment is my Moog Little Phatty. Sometimes it is just more inspiring to build sounds on an analogue synth than in the DAW.
3. Where does the name Echo Map spring from?
I have to credit Hudson Lee for this one. I am terrible at coming up with names for projects and struggled for a few months before asking some friends for help. Thankfully Hudson had a few good ideas and I decided on Echo Map. I like that the name has both an auditory and a visual aspect to it. When I write music I always imagine landscapes or places to go along with the sounds.

5. What obsessions do you explore in your spare time?
I have a full time job at university, so music is the obsession I explore in my spare time. Besides Echo Map I have a jazz band I play live gigs with from time to time and a crazy jazz-electronic-fusion band that will make its debut on the internet at some point in the near future.
6. What is something that you believe that other people think is insane?
I make my living with scientific research and I am not a spiritual person at all. I doubt there is anything I “believe” that most other people would consider to be insane. There are quite a few anti-science people out there though, so I guess I won’t have much common ground with those guys.
7. If you could merge 2-3 musicians/artists into one super musician/artist, who would you choose?
Louis Cole + Jack Stratton + Thundercat
